Since then, there's been a lot of change in the world of Trekkies, the biggest of which being the cinematic reboot of the series to establish a new Enterprise with a new Kirk, Spock and the rest of the original crew, which has created something of a schism in the fan base, with the hardcore fans siding with the original films and TV series, and the casual fans during to J.J. Abrams' new homage-intensive edition.

Looking at the crowd, talking with the fans and observing the faithful at Star Trek: Mission New York, the Trek convention that took place September 2-4, 2016 at New York City's Javits Center, it's clear that the new Trek has a much less rabid portion of the representation amongst the fans, who side most heavily with Captains Kirk and Picard, with the other TV series inspiring smaller pockets of devotion. That the only two representatives of the new films scheduled to attend--Alice Eve and Karl Urban--both canceled before the event, said everything about the reboot's status amongst Trekkers.

Talking with security, it became clear that Friday, the first day of the show, was a quiet affair, and as of two hours before the doors were to open, Saturday didn't look to be much different. The morning of a New York Comic Con day (also held at the Javits Center), the building is crawling with fans, with massive lines wrapping around the building. Walking up to the Javits on Saturday, you'd have no idea the building was even open. Part of that is the small footprint of Mission New York, with the show floor contained entirely in the building's north corridor, which meant the lines were located at the far end of the Javits.

That said, as of 8 a.m., there was a grand total of 18 people on line waiting to get in. There were certainly excuses for such meager attendance, from the Labor Day holiday weekend to the threat of a tropical storm headed toward the northeast. But the most likely culprits were a lack of awareness for the show's first outing (many of the fans I spoke to found out about the event shortly before it took place), the proximity to the east coast's premiere convention (taking place just a month before the heavily-attended NYCC) and the lack of a Trek TV show to fan the flames of the faithful who haven't embraced the new films. However, as the clock ticked toward 10, the line did grow, with more cosplay representation, to the point where by the time the doors open, the line reached around the north end of the building.

That said, once inside, the show floor was unimpressive, with a sparse few displays (a mix of science and commerce, with NASA, the Roddenberry company and several video game companies on hand) and very few vendors to tempt dollars from wallets (though yours truly plunked down some cash for an official tribble that vibrates and coo's.) A pass around the room offered the chance to check out a replica of the original series' bridge (a key photo op), try out a new virtual reality Star Trek game (a hot ticket that was instantly unavailable minutes after the show opened) and explore some science. You wouldn't spend long there though (except for standing on lines), as the real action (outside of the paid photo and autograph hall for fans wanting to make sure they get their desired celebrity interaction with folks like William Shatner, Walter Koenig and a host of more recent Trek TV stars) was in the panels.

The smaller panels got very fine grained, from interesting chats about Trek-adjacent science like extraterrestrial communication, various incarnations of the franchise--from cartoons to books, and the fandom as a whole, as well as in its various smaller niches. The place to be though was the main hall, which came most alive for a raucous panel featuring several members of the Next Generation cast, including Levar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn and Gates McFadden. The room, which holds around 3,000 people, was filled to overflowing for the enjoyable reunion, with rows of fans seated on the floor and standing around the outside. Panels with the children of Gene Roddenberry and Leonard Nimoy or film actors Peter Weller and Bruce Greenwood were less heavily attended, but no less enjoyable, while a staged reading of Star Trek IV, with Mary Stuart Masterson as Captain Kirk and a cast featuring Terry Farrell, Ethan Phillips and NASA mohawk dude Bobak Ferdowski, gave the convention the kind of unique experience it needed to set it apart.

If you wanted to take the pulse of the Trekkies though, a panel with two writers of the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series gave a rather interesting perspective, considering the push the show is getting, with a giant floor to ceiling banner greeting attendees at the doors. The main hall was less than half full for this event, and the reaction to a sizzle reel provided by showrunner Bryan Fuller was muted at best. Informal chats with fans showed a very hesitant interest in the new show, in large part because of how it's being rolled out on yet another subscription streaming service, which was viewed as a roadblock, along with a concern that the show will be more like the new movies than the previous TV series.

Thinking back to the first New York Comic Con, the growth the show has made in 10 years makes one think the next Star Trek convention could be better for everyone around, but whether the fan base exists to support that growth is unclear (though one attendee pointed out that the regular show in New Jersey is bigger, so perhaps they are just in hibernation and the new series could bring them out for another show.) Either way, the show ran rather smoothly from all accounts, and people seemed to be enjoying themselves, so anything else would be gravy.
Book Expo America and BookCon were held from May 27-31 at the Javits
Center in New York, featuring a variety of book publishers showing off
their upcoming wares, while some movie adaptations, including films of
John (The Fault in Our Stars) Green’s Paper Towns and Emma Donoghue’s Room,
grabbed the bulk of the attention left behind by a wave of YouTube book
stars, including Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Connor Franta. However,
back in the world of printed entertainment, there was plenty for fans of
movies and TV to check out.
[adult swim]’s oddball crime “drama”, Eagleheart, starring Chris Elliott, Maria Thayer and Brett Gelman,
returns for its third season November 14, with a new twist, as a
season-long plot will wind its way through the show’s traditionally
stand-alone 15-minute episodes. At New York ComicCon, Elliott and
Thayer, along with the core creative crew of Michael Koman, Andrew Weinberg and Jason Woliner, sat down with me
to talk about the new set-up and how many people then can kill in about
two hours, as well as what it’s like working with their Georgian
overlords and where you can get your Breaking Bad fix now.
Zak Smith is not your average, everyday porn star. Most porn stars don't
have an M.F.A. from Yale. Most porn stars aren't renowned artists with
gallery shows. And most porn stars don't have their own web series
documenting the Dungeons and Dragons games they lead as Dungeon Master.
Together with his girlfriend, adult model Mandy Morbid, he stars in I Hit It With My Axe, a show on EscapistMagazine.com
that's gained a lot of interest due to the concept: watch D&D as
played by a group of people from in and around the porn industry.
The one thing late-night TV needed was another tall comedian on TBS, so
Conan O’Brien has called upon podcaster excellente Pete Holmes (You Made it Weird)
to bring his brand of thoughtful, positive, yet intensely silly comedy
to the airwaves following his own show, in the half-hour The Pete Holmes Show,
which kicks off a four-nights-a-week schedule October 28th. I had a chance to sit down with Holmes, his executive
producer Nick Bernstein and supervising producer Oren Brimer at the New
York ComicCon to talk about how his show will make your life better, why
podcasting is like a romantic relationship and what it’s like to see a
two-story image of himself having sex with the sky.
After stunning the world (or at least the portion of the world that pays
attention to what showrunners do) by reclaiming his series Community,
after being removed for season four, Dan Harmon has taken the next step
and created a cartoon for [adult swim]. (Naturally, considering the
memorable animated episodes of Community.) Co-created with Justin Roiland (heard on Out There, Gravity Falls and Adventure Time), Rick and Morty
is your average sitcom about Rick, a crazy scientist, who leads his
moronic grandson Morty into intergalactic danger. In advance of the
half-hour show’s December premiere, Harmon and Roiland sat down with me at NY ComicCon to talk about testicle

Sketch comedy has rarely been hotter on TV than right now, with shows
airing on several major networks. One of the more recent additions has
been IFC's The Birthday Boys. Executive produced by a pair of SNL alumni with their own sketch-comedy success in Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show) and Ben Stiller (The Ben Stiller Show)
, The Birthday Boys translated their popular Upright Citizens Brigade
show to television, bringing a hard-to-define style to the TV sketch
comedy universe. The first season was released in a highly-recommended
DVD set in August 2014 (DVDTalk's review)
and the second season kicks off Friday, October 17 at 11 p.m. EST on
IFC. Following an appearance at New York ComicCon, three members of the
group, Dave Ferguson, Mike Hanford and Tim Kalpakis, spent a little time
with me for a delightful little chat about
adapting the stage to TV, working with Dana Carvey and combating
segregation.
Perhaps you’ve seen the sizzle reel, or the bizarre screen tests, but
there’s not much that can prepare you for the antics of the Heartshe
clan, stars of the new [adult swim] mini-series The Heart, She Holler,
running nightly starting November 6th. A live action “drama” following
the disturbed decendents of Boss Hoss Heratshe, it’s the latest
production by PFFR, the unusually original group behind cult hits Delocated and Wonder Showzen.
Before freaking out viewers, PFFR co-executive producers John Lee and
Alyson Levy were joined by castmembers Patton Oswalt, Kristen Schaal,
Heather Lawless, Leo Fitzpatrick and Joseph Sikora to talk with me.
Reality television has made stars out of just about everyone, so why not
a guy in the witness protection program? Well, besides the obvious
problem with giving publicity to someone who's supposed to be hiding.
But that's easily solved with a jaunty ski mask and some voice
alteration, as shown by the adult swim series Delocated. The man behind the mockumentary, comedy writer Jon Glaser (Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Dana Carvey Show)
spent a little time, sans mask, with me, and
talked about what a difference 15 minutes can make, taking over at
Dunder Mifflin and why beards and masks don't mix.
If you watch China, IL on [adult swim], the brainchild of cartoonist Brad Neely,
it's a pretty sure bet that you love it, because it's pretty much all
or nothing when it comes to this series about the worst college in
America, it's terrible professors and its sad, yet striving students.
Suffice to say, it's the only animated series that features Greta
Gerwig, Hulk Hogan and Chelsea Peretti. The show's second season debuted
in September to rather consistently rising ratings, which made the New
York ComicCon as good a time as ever for Neely, executive producer Daniel Weidenfeld and actress Brooke Hogan to sit down with me to chat about getting longer, nepotism and lollipops.

Francis Rizzo III has returned to ComicCon after a year off (Thanks, Obama) and the convention is better than ever, with tons of big-name panels and interesting stuff to check out. Interviews with the folks behind Bob's Burgers, Archer, Eagleheart, The League and Chozen, as well as chats with Pete Holmes and Dan Harmon are on tap, but for now, here's what was happening on Friday.

Yeah!
For anyone who is tired of getting DVDs lacking in bonus content and paltry streaming options, AMC is coming through in a big way with Yeah!, a new streaming app that marries cult movies with exclusive extras (a mix of text and video) created by AMC's people, in a slick presentation that syncs the extras with the films, but lets you enjoy them separately as well. It's like taking the old New Line Infinifil concept and applying it to streaming. Getting to sample Clerks with this treatment made it clear this could be the next big thing for cinephiles, and with subscriptions, TV (remember AMC's properties, like Breaking Bad and Mad Men) and purchases being discussed, this idea has some serious potential. The service is live now with 28 titles, and more added on a weekly basis.

Vampire Academy
The last place I thought I would be spending time at the NY ComicCon would be in a panel about a movie adaptation of a young-adult novel series about teen vampires. However, when I saw that Vampire Academy is written by Daniel Waters (Heathers) and directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, personal favorite The House of Yes) I felt like it might be worth skipping the Comic Book Men panel. With the teen girls gasping over the younger members of the panel, the Waters brothers offered entertainment for the older folks in the crowd, who know Barbara Stanwyck and The Hunger. The trailer shown was actually quite entertaining, with the mix of sex, violence and humor you'd expect from these filmmakers. If the actual movie doesn't drown in Twilight-level drama, it could be a surprising good time, crossing demographic boundaries.

Chucky Turns 25
The terrifying toy returned this month with the sixth film in the series, The Curse of Chucky, as well as a retrospective collection of the previous five films. After turning more toward meta comedy in the previous two films, creator Don Mancini brings the series back to its horror roots as writer and director, as a terrifying remix trailer made all too vividly clear. At ComicCon, he led several members of his cast, including Jennifer Tilly and Brad Dourif, on a trip down memory lane under the guidance of moderator Harry Knowles of Ain't it Cool fame. Tilly's presence made for a fun time, as she told stories of the perversion of puppeteers, and Dourif embarrassed his daughter Fiona, star of the franchise's latest chapter. It's safe to say that no one in attendance will think of little doll parts the same way ever again, and they'll probably stay away from craft services on the set of the next Chucky movie.

A New Novak
Since The Office left the NBC line-up, actor/writer/producer BJ Novak has kept something of a low profile, but he returns with Saving Mr. Banks, a Disney film about the music of Mary Poppins, and, in February, One More Thing, a new book of short stories, musings and other brief ventures. At ComicCon he entertained a filled-beyond-capacity room with a few pieces from the book, including a discussion of dark matter with a none-too-forthcoming scientist and a challenge Tony Robbins couldn't refuse. If these stories are any proof, this book is one to look out for, and Novak talked about taking the stories on the road, which would be even better, as his readings make them that much better.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3140775832009069491.post-25059098020631044212013-10-01T11:43:00.000-07:002015-09-30T11:43:46.255-07:00A Chap Off the Old Block: Writer/Director Joe Cornish's Attack the Block

After 15 years working in TV, radio and film, British writer director
Joe Cornish has finally become an overnight sensation, thanks to his
cult hit sci-fi flick Attack the Block, which chronicles the
battle between a gang of inner-city London street toughs and the vicious
aliens who crash-land in their neighborhood one night. Up next for
Cornish is the release of the film on DVD and Blu-Ray (arriving October
25th), the high-profile new Tintin animated movie, which he did a re-write on with pal Edgar Wright, and a co-writing gig with Wright on his highly-anticipated Ant-Man
feature film. But first, he took a moment to sit down with me to talk about aliens, anti-heroes and audio
commentaries.
Though attempts were made to compete, like Wizard World's New York presence, and smaller shows, like the Big Apple Comic Con, crop up here and there, getting to the city and battling the near-claustrophobic crowds isn't for everyone. For the first time in pretty much anyone's memory, Long Island received its first ComicCon on June 16, 2013, as Frank Patz kicked off the first EternalCon at the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City, NY.

As someone who attended every NY Comic Con from the first (missing last year's only because it conflicted with the Presidential Debate I was working) I've learned to hold off on criticizing a new con too much, as lessons can be learned and improvements made, so there's no reason to slag a newcomer. A smaller first-time, one-day con, it would be easy to criticize this show, but expectations have to be curbed and there has to be context. But no matter how you view it, Patz and company chose a great location, placing the show inside a museum dedicated to aircraft and space exploration, two topics with plenty of crossover with pop-culture fans. Pay the cost of $14 ($10 in advance) and you got to enjoy the show and the museum, making for an enjoyable day, and a cool environment that was better than your usual industrial convention hall.

The vendor floor, which snaked through the main lobby and cafe area of the museum, was small but varied, offering a mix of products, from bargain comics to action figures, interesting trinkets and anime accessories. You weren't going to find everything you might be looking for, but there were enough options to let you walk away with something good, and prices were reasonable on average (personally I picked up a somewhat open Raven (Teen Titans) figure for just $5.)

On the second floor (accessible by stairs on either side of the building) sat Artist Alley, with a number of big comic names (including Jim Shooter, Sean Chen, Arthur Suydam, Nelson Decastro and Billy Tucci (sadly, Larry Hama had to cancel)), along with an assortment of talented indie artists and small-press companies. Original art, prints and more were available at solid prices, along with the opportunity to chat, afforded by the show's smaller scope. In addition, a few pro wrestlers and Taimak from The Last Dragon were on hand to sign autographs and take pictures. It was more comic-heavy than most shows these days, which, depending on your tastes, is welcome or disappointing.

As with most conventions, there's got to be panels and cosplay, or else you go to jail or something. The panels were limited, just four in all, but three focused on the business and art of comics, so they were of actual value to those who attended (a small number for the 10:30 a.m. drawing workshop, as attendees focused on the vendors early on.) The cosplay attendance was very strong, with representatives from local cosplay groups specializing in Star Wars characters, Star Trek, the Ghostbusters, and G.I. Joe, with a very impressive (and obscure) Alley Viper on hand.

But that's not all. Being a museum, it was fitting that there were three exhibitions, a selection of pop-culture cars (including the Batmobile and Knight Rider's KITT), a display of mega-collector Billy Simon's memorabilia, including many Planet of the Apes pieces (not to mention Beetlejuice), as well as a small display from the Long Island Art group. The last two were positioned on a futuristic walkway that looked over the museum floor, again adding a special touch to the proceedings you don't normally get from a ComicCon. In addition, two short films were shown in the museum's IMAX theater, one by Tucci, the other a G.I. Joe fan-film.

The success of the show will mainly be judged by whether there's a second edition in 2014, but with a reported 3000-plus attending, one expects the show was not a failure, and may result in an annual comic convention on Long Island. The problem though is a limited amount of room for growth, as this show already seemingly maxed out the museum's floor space. Perhaps the Nassau Coliseum convention hall is the next step, but it would be a shame to lose the sci-fi feel of the museum.
But there's a major difference and that's programming to prevent cheap unlimited combos. It adds a level of challenge to a level of beauty, making this a game to watch when it comes out on XBLA and PSN in early 2012. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3140775832009069491.post-13112677572103833732011-10-14T11:50:00.001-07:002011-10-14T11:50:04.709-07:00Ubiart: The Next Big Style?Coming out in November, the new Ray-Man game (for all three major platforms) sports a gorgeous hand-drawn style that Ubisoft calls Ubiart. It results in some of the smoothest, most detailed in-game animation seen in modern gaming. The game isn't bad either, with the fast platforming action providing the wow-that's-fun feeling that the original Sonic games had. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3140775832009069491.post-63158934968493239062011-10-14T11:25:00.001-07:002011-10-14T11:25:40.845-07:00Ears-On with Turtle BeachAfter doing my best Metal Gear stealth job past security, I had a chance to check out Turtle Beach's new headsets made for Modern Warfare 3. There are four models, starting with the $99 Foxtrot going up to the $299 Delta, which sports rechargeable wireless and 7.1 surround sound. Pulling them on, they are super comfortable, they cut out the outside world well, wthe mic sounds tight and you can download special presets set up specifically by the game's developers. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3140775832009069491.post-90214323299728706352011-10-14T04:44:00.001-07:002011-10-14T04:44:20.771-07:00More PayneHad a chance to watch some live gameplay from the upcoming Max Payne 3, and from the few shoot-outs I saw, it's going to be a nice step-up for the frachise, with improved weapons handling and some very impressive animation. Being able to dive to get your shot and then having 360 degrees of range from which to shoot while lying on your back looks like brilliant fun.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
