Notes from Book Expo America and BookCon
Book Expo America and BookCon were held from May 27-31 at the Javits
Center in New York, featuring a variety of book publishers showing off
their upcoming wares, while some movie adaptations, including films of
John (The Fault in Our Stars) Green’s Paper Towns and Emma Donoghue’s Room,
grabbed the bulk of the attention left behind by a wave of YouTube book
stars, including Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Connor Franta. However,
back in the world of printed entertainment, there was plenty for fans of
movies and TV to check out.

Eagleheart: Paradise Rising
[adult swim]’s oddball crime “drama”, Eagleheart, starring Chris Elliott, Maria Thayer and Brett Gelman, returns for its third season November 14, with a new twist, as a season-long plot will wind its way through the show’s traditionally stand-alone 15-minute episodes. At New York ComicCon, Elliott and Thayer, along with the core creative crew of Michael Koman, Andrew Weinberg and Jason Woliner, sat down with me to talk about the new set-up and how many people then can kill in about two hours, as well as what it’s like working with their Georgian overlords and where you can get your Breaking Bad fix now.

I Hit It With My Axe
Zak Smith is not your average, everyday porn star. Most porn stars don't have an M.F.A. from Yale. Most porn stars aren't renowned artists with gallery shows. And most porn stars don't have their own web series documenting the Dungeons and Dragons games they lead as Dungeon Master. Together with his girlfriend, adult model Mandy Morbid, he stars in I Hit It With My Axe, a show on EscapistMagazine.com that's gained a lot of interest due to the concept: watch D&D as played by a group of people from in and around the porn industry.

The Pete Holmes Show: “We’re Not Here to Tell You How Much the World Sucks”
The one thing late-night TV needed was another tall comedian on TBS, so Conan O’Brien has called upon podcaster excellente Pete Holmes (You Made it Weird) to bring his brand of thoughtful, positive, yet intensely silly comedy to the airwaves following his own show, in the half-hour The Pete Holmes Show, which kicks off a four-nights-a-week schedule October 28th. I had a chance to sit down with Holmes, his executive producer Nick Bernstein and supervising producer Oren Brimer at the New York ComicCon to talk about how his show will make your life better, why podcasting is like a romantic relationship and what it’s like to see a two-story image of himself having sex with the sky.

Rick and Morty: Dan Harmon’s Next Experiment
After stunning the world (or at least the portion of the world that pays attention to what showrunners do) by reclaiming his series Community, after being removed for season four, Dan Harmon has taken the next step and created a cartoon for [adult swim]. (Naturally, considering the memorable animated episodes of Community.) Co-created with Justin Roiland (heard on Out There, Gravity Falls and Adventure Time), Rick and Morty is your average sitcom about Rick, a crazy scientist, who leads his moronic grandson Morty into intergalactic danger. In advance of the half-hour show’s December premiere, Harmon and Roiland sat down with me at NY ComicCon to talk about testicle monsters, cracking whips and learning to collaborate.
